Lake Motosu

The deepest, the clearest, and the most suitable lake for expert travelers amongst Fuji Five Lakes

About Lake Motosu

Recommendations!

  • You should take a picture of the famous “upside-down Fuji” on the bill!
  • In fact, the depth and clarity of the water is the best in the Fuji Five Lakes!
  • But because it is the most modest of the Fuji Five Lakes, it is also a lake that is favored by experts!

The Lake Kawaguchi Station, which is the railroad gateway to the Fuji Five lakes area, is very crowded with visitors from foreign countries. Most of them go to Mt. Fuji for climbing, some of them go to luxurious lakefront hotels around the Lake Kawaguchi, or some of them go to explore the “famous” Jukai, which means ‘Sea of Trees’.
As Fujigoko (Fuji Five Lakes) consist of five lakes, literally; why don’t you rent a car or a bicycle to visit all of them?

Take a look at the NASA’s satellite image of the lakes. Obviously, you will see Mt.Fuji at the center. Can you name all the five lakes?

From right to left, are Lake Yamanaka, Lake Kawaguchi, Lake Sai, Lake Shoji, and Lake Motosu.

Lake Motosu was the last but not the least. Actually, it is the one that we recommend you the most for Japan experts who want to avoid places full of first-time travelers.

Lake Motosu Head for the western shore of Lake Motosu, which is famous as Instagrammable site. Here you will see Mt. Fuji’s reflection on the lake, known as the “upside-down Fuji”!

The view of “upside-down Fuji” seen from the east bank of the Lake Motosu is so beautiful that it is printed on 1,000yen-banknote. Don’t forget to keep at least one. In July, 2024 it will be renewed and you will not get any in the next trip to Japan!

Lake Motosu is the third biggest lake amongst the five. (So, we don’t have to mention it!) But it is the deepest. The maximum depth is about 120 meters, which is nearly ten times depper than the largest Lake Yamanaka. Its water is the clearest and the water transparency is the highest (12.7 meters).

Needless to say, Lake Motosu is perfect for snorkeling and diving.

Many of you have dived in the ocean, but only a few have dived in freshwater lakes. Small fish and shrimps will hide on the craggy surface of the lava that erupted from Mt. Fuji many years ago. Water springs up from the bottom of the lake. You will see beautiful nature created by the earth itself.

Lake Motosu is a sanctuary for outdoor enthusiasts; not just underwater sports but also on-the-water sports, such as windsurfing, canoeing, and SUP.

Lakeside Camping is also recommended. Spend relaxing and memorable holidays in Lake Motosu area! The water almost transparent blue is waiting for you!
