Kuu House is a renovated 180-year-old farmhouse for accommodation and cultural experience in the village of Chikahagi.
Recently, in Japan, renovated old folk houses are very popular and you will find many of them when you search for accommodation on the internet. Obviously, there are some that would make you regret your choice… Here, in Kuu House there are various secrets which will make you feel your choice is right.
The history of the farmhouse now called Kuu House began 180 years ago. The owner run a sericulture business, which used to be the main industry in this area at that time. It had been empty before Yuko-san, also known as “Okān,” found it 30 years ago. She fell in love with this old house and moved in to spend her days to pursue her favorite activity, the art!
She decorated it, little by little, with Japanese antique furniture and paintings, which is the second stage of this house.
In 2019, the third stage started when her daughter, Miki, and her son in law, Keita, decided to renovate it as an inn, when it was named after their beloved dog, Kuu.
It may seem like a normal old folk house and some of you may be disappointed. But, once you step inside the house, you will know that your choice was right!
The flowers adorning the rooms are a breathtaking beauty, featuring wildflowers and trees found in the mountains. The whole house is meticulously cleaned and so astonishing. All the decoration of the rooms are chosen with tender care to make you feel comfortable.
Here, at Kuu House, there is no language barrier, which often make you bury your head in your hands when you go to the rural area. Keita is an English speaker and they have had guests from all over the world. You will surely love the conversation with Keita, Miki, and “Okān” (mom) and you will feel like you’ve found a new Japanese family!
Food is also awesome. You will enjoy the blessings of the mountains and fields nearby, fresh vegetable, wild plants picked in mountains, and game like wild boar cooked over charcoal, gathering around the hearth.
The tray, adorned with antique small plates and flowers, featuring rich and seasonal taste, will also satisfy your eyes, taste buds, stomach, and heart!
If you are vegetarian, vegan, or you have any specific demands, please tell them at the time of the reservation. Your requests will be welcome.
All the vegies are pesticide-free organic grown by Sanae, who lives nearby. Sanae’s field, also a scenic spot, offers a variety of experience menus such as harvesting experiences and Japanese traditional “udon” noodle making using tools which are passed down through generations. Visit their official website to gather more detailed information! Again, we tell you, there’s no doubt that Kuu House will become your second home in Japan.
